HistoryYunnan is one of the cradles of human life. The Yuanmou Ape Man live here 1.7 million years ago. Fossils known as "dragon bones" predate Peking Man.
Yunnan's rich natural resources were a magnet which resulted in the migration of 25 minority races, Tibetian nomads and Chinese. The migrations continued south to populate Southeast Asia and also created a passageway between ancient China and Myanmar, India and other countries that was later known as the "Southern Silk Route".
There were shifts of Yunnan's power center under various dynasties. Kublia Khan put an end to the Dali Kingdom in 1253 and in 1274 the center of power moved to the present capital of Kunming.
In 1949 Yunnan became a province in the People's Republic of China.
