Once called Rangoon, Myanmar's capital is a quiet garden city at he head of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) river delta.Gold-covered Swedagon Pagoda towers above the skyline. It is more than 2,500 years old and is active every day.
Yangon is a shoppers paradise offering supurb arts and handicrafts including teak carvings, lacquerware, silverware, brassware, woven tapestries, silk and embroidery. Myanmar is famous for jems, rubies sapphires and green jade.
Hlawga Wildlife Park, a 45 minute drive from Yangon, is a 1,650 acre refuge for some 70 kinds of herbivores and 90 species of birds. Visitors can enjoy picnics, elephant rides, boating and fishing.
