Bagan

On a plain along the Irrawaddy south of Mandalay lies Bagan, one of the world's great archaeological wonders. Better known as Pagan, "The City of Four Million Pagodas", it was built in the 11th to 13th centuries. Because of age, earthquakes and war, about 2 thousand structures still exist including one of the first, the Temple of Ananda , considered a masterpiece of the time. The Ananda Pagoda festival is held every January.

The Thatbinnyu Temple -- over 215 feet high -- is the highest of the monuments and is a good place to watch the sun set over the entire Bagan plain.

The Shwezigon Pagoda was a prototype for later pagodas in Myanmar. It contains glazed plaques showing scenes from the Jatakas, scenes from the life of Buddha.
