I-San, along the Mekong

I-San, the local name for Northeast Thailand, denotes prosperity and vastness. Here the Mekong may separate Thailand and Laos physically, but they share much in history and culture. Buildings combine both Thai and Lao styles. In Surin, Buri Ram and Pimai the Khymer influence is strong. The annual Elephant Roundup in Surin is one of Thailand's most famous events.

Archaeologists uncovered bronze objects in Ban Chiang that predate the Bronze Age in the Middle East. Countless pots with unusual swirling patterns were judged to have been made around 3,000 BC.

Ubon Ratchathani is known for its pre-historic rock paintings.
