The Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars is a mystery. Nobody knows who created the huge vessels that are scattered about this highland plain between Luang Prabang and Vientiane. Nobody knows for sure what they were for. The most likely speculation is that they were funeral urns. The jars date back some 2 thousand years and the largest of them weigh six tons.

The Plain of Jars was one of the most strategic battlegrounds of the Indochina War and the most heavily bombed. Despite almost daily B52 bombing for five years, the jars remained intact.
