Message from American Express

Over the past decades as tourism and travel have developed throughout the world, we at American Express have tried to help lead the way and assist in opening up new destinations.

As travel and business professionals, we believe it is necessasry to take a broad and long-term view of developing destinations. We feel strongly that travel and tourism should benefit equally the people who travel and the places they visit. We believe that tourism should be recognized as an economic force, that creates jobs, industries and new prosperity - while giving visitors the opportunity to understand and appreciate other cultures. At the same time we maintain or committment to environmental concerns, which are key priorities in programs supported by American Express. We realize that clean air, clear water and an attractive destination are what attract tourists.

In recent years, American Express has undertaken special projects in cooperation with individual destinations and regional organizations. Last year the China National Tourism Administration designated American Express as the "Official Card of Tourism for China". We spearheaded the promotion of China tourism in North America and sponsored The Official Guide to China. This year we have come together with the Pacific Asia Travel Association - Asia Division, to promote the lands linked by the Mekong River.

Although these six countries are already established, in varying degrees, as travel destinations, their potential as a distinct grouping is far greater than that of any one of its own. They have many elements in common, but each has its unique attractions. Together, we believe, the Jewels of the Mekong make up one of the world's great treasures.

We wish you a wonderful journey.

Sincerely yours,
